In 1961, Walter “Windy” Marsh founded Tapco Products Company. He developed the concept of aluminum trim fabrication and introduced the Port-O-Brake®, the first portable bender offered to the market. This product launched the Company’s line of professional installation tools and accessories.
In 1974, Tapco formed Mid-America Building Products to expand the Company’s product offering to exterior building products.
In 1991, the Company formed Builders Edge® to offer exterior building products to the retail marketplace.
In 1992, due to an increasing presence in global markets, the company name was changed to Tapco International Corporation.
In 1999, the Company further expanded to the European marketplace with the Tapco Offshore Group.
In 2001, Tapco acquired Atlantic Shutter Systems to offer custom functional composite shutters. Today, Atlantic Shutter also manufactures Stonefield™ Classic Shutters and the HarborView™ Shutter Collection.
In 2002, Tapco acquired Vantage® to offer an additional shutter option in the retail marketplace.
In 2003, Miami Foundry was acquired to further expand Tapco’s product offering to include vinyl siding with the look and feel of genuine cedar shake. The company name was later changed to The Foundry™.
In 2004, Headwaters, Inc. acquired Tapco International. Headwaters, Inc. is a public company (NYSE: HW) with the following operating units: Energy Services, Resources, Construction Materials, and Technology Innovation. Tapco represents a significant portion of the Construction Materials business.
In early 2005, Tapco International began marketing its brands under the umbrella company name of The Tapco Group™, A Headwaters Company. Under this new structure, some brand names were changed to better-reflect their business:
- Mid-America Building Products was changed to Mid-America Siding Components™
- Atlantic Shutter Systems was changed to Atlantic Premium Shutters™
- Tapco Products Company was changed to Tapco Integrated Tool Systems™
Also in early 2005, a new brand, Home Defense™, was launched. Products from Home Defense protect windows from hurricanes and storms using innovative clear panels.
In late 2005, Tapco acquired Max-Slate to extend the product offering to synthetic slate roofing materials. The brand name was later changed to InSpire™ Roofing Products.
Also in late 2005, The Tapco Group brands were segmented into six product categories for further product positioning. The categories include:
- Storm Protection
- Roofing
- Siding
- Shutters
- Siding Components
- Tool Systems
